Who is PLAN of California?
PLAN of California answers the question “Who will care when I’m not there?” Helping a relative with mental illness can be difficult in the best of mental health systems. Frequently, the only bridge between poverty, extreme illness and social isolation for the person with severe mental illness is the care the family provides. But, what happens when the family is no longer able or available to provide that care? That’s when PLAN steps in.

PLAN (formerly known as Proxy Parents Services Foundation) safeguards public entitlements for people disabled by mental illness while providing family-like attention to help the person thrive, enjoy and improve his or her quality of life. Governed by a volunteer board of directors, the majority of whom must be family members, PLAN’s programs are growing and available throughout much of the state. PLAN, Planned Lifetime Assistance Network, is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation established in 1990 as a unique entity by NAMI-California and the Mental Health Association of Los Angeles County.
